IIFT 2010, the entrance exam for admissions to IIFT Delhi and IIFT Kolkata, is now knocking at the door of IIFT aspirants. The test is slated to be held on Sunday, November 28, 2010. In this exclusive article by MBAUniverse.com, the students of IIFT share with you the key aspects of IIFT exam and the strategies that will make you a winner.
Difference with other exams: The difference between IIFT entrance exam and other exams like CAT, XAT, FMS etc. mainly lies in the section of General Awareness. Hence you need to prepare for this section in order to crack IIFT. As Preyoshi Ganguly, a second year student of IIFT puts, “IIFT has a separate section devoted to General Awareness, which often decides your chances of qualifying for the next round.”
Also, the number of questions in IIFT varies. Last year, the number of questions was 122 with unequal distribution of questions in each section. Hence you should be mentally prepared for surprises with respect to the number of questions and the number of sections. IIFT is known for throwing surprises!
Special effort: If you have already taken CAT then you are already aware of the common sections like Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, but in the context of IIFT you have to put some extra effort for the specialized pattern of the IIFT questions. Firstly, you have to put good effort on the General Awareness section. “Prepare normally like any other exams, but few days before IIFT exam, start reading more into GK perspective,” says Srinivas Raman, another student of IIFT.
Apart from the General Awareness section, many IIFT aspirants find the Data Interpretation section long and tricky. To address this problem, Saurav Tibrewal, an IIFT student says, “If you are not good at calculations, then attempt this section last. There is a way to crack these lengthy calculations. Learn that. But do attempt the doable questions in DI, as last year IIFT had sectional cut offs.”
Speed & accuracy: Speed is an important requirement for cracking IIFT paper. This is because the number of questions is much more as compared to other exams like CAT and XAT. You have to solve around 120 questions within 120 minutes. Hence focus on the time that you spend per question. “The only additional angle where I focused w.r.t. the IIFT entrance exam was reducing the time I spent per question.  The reason I say this is because IIFT paper has 120 questions, while a CAT or a XAT has lesser than 100 questions.  Hence, I wanted to focus more on speed without compromising on the correctness of my answer,” says Magnesh Kumar, an IIFT student.
So you should focus on speed calculation for Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation sections and speed reading for the Reading Comprehension questions. So in the last few days before IIFT entrance exam, focus on speed calculation without compromising on the accuracy.
Read instructions: Before starting the paper you must read carefully the instructions given in the paper. As the paper changes the pattern in some way or the other, you should read the instructions carefully before you start the exam. You should look for the sectional cut offs, directions to answer the questions and other important information.
Keep tension at bay: Most importantly, you should just focus on your preparation and not get tensed about the tough or lengthy questions that are likely to appear in the IIFT 2010. Along with your preparation and performance, what matters most during the test is your ability to maintain your cool. “It was all about keeping one's cool and proper time management,” says Preyoshi. So in the last few days finalize your strategy, work on time management and keep tension at bay.
